Core Ayurvedic Principles
Ayurveda is a traditional system of holistic medicine that originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. The word comes from Sanskrit:
Ayur = life + Veda = knowledge or wisdom
It is often translated as "the wisdom of life."
Ayurveda views health as a state of balance between the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, it seeks to address the root causes of imbalance through:
Nutrition and digestion
Daily routines and lifestyle practices
Herbal medicine
Yoga and movement
Breathwork and meditation
Sleep and rest
Seasonal living
Cleansing and detoxification practices
The Three Doshas
Ayurveda describes three constitutional energies, or doshas, which exist in everyone:
Vata (air + ether): movement, creativity, nervous system.
Pitta (fire + water): metabolism, transformation, focus.
Kapha (earth + water): stability, grounding, nourishment.
Each person has a unique combination of these energies, and imbalance in one or more doshas is believed to contribute to physical and emotional symptoms.
Core Ayurvedic Principles
Food is medicine.
Digestion (Agni) is central to health.
Daily rhythms influence well-being.
The mind and body are inseparable.
Prevention is just as important as treatment.
Many modern wellness practices—such as mindful eating, tongue scraping, oil pulling, seasonal nutrition, yoga, and meditation—have roots in Ayurvedic traditions.
